Home/Guides/How many strings does a piano have

Reference guide

88 keys do not mean 88 strings.

An acoustic piano can use several strings for one note, so its string count is different from its key count. Yamaha describes a model-dependent total usually around 230. That is an explanation of acoustic design, not an exact count for every piano or an electronic keyboard.

Usually around 230, with a model caveat.

Yamaha’s string-design explanation says the number depends on the model and is usually around 230. Its manufacturing guide also describes approximately 230 strings. Neither sets a universal count for every acoustic piano.

A key is the control a player presses. A string is part of the acoustic sound-producing system. The 88-key explorer explains keyboard range; key count is not a string inventory. Electronic instruments need their own model descriptions.

One note can use several strings.

1 string
2 strings
3 strings
Original schematic: groups for one note, not exact lengths, pitch boundaries or the layout of a particular instrument.

Yamaha describes three strings per tenor/treble note and a reduction through three, two and one in the bass. It explains that multiple strings help increase volume and enrich the sound. That is not a guarantee that every three-string note matches a bass note’s loudness or sustain.

Wound bass strings and bare wire.

In Yamaha’s explanation, bass strings have copper winding; tenor and treble strings use bare wire. Grouping and winding relate to the acoustic design. Do not infer the exact count or transition keys from a generic diagram, cabinet size or keyboard count.

The soundboard and bridge guide owns the vibration path. Seeing strings cross inside an instrument is a different question from counting the strings sounded by a note. Ask the seller or technician to show the arrangement without removing parts yourself.

Count is not condition or a tuning quote.

String count alone is not a quality score, a repair-cost prediction or a fixed number of adjustments. A technician needs to consider the actual piano and the work requested. A reference figure cannot show whether a particular string, tuning pin or other component is in good condition.

Describe the model, symptoms and known tuning history through the tuning page. Read A440 and pitch raising for terminology. Describe the symptoms and ask what work is appropriate for the actual piano.

Questions

Strings and keys, answered.

Does an 88-key piano always have 230 strings?

No. Yamaha’s explanation says string count depends on the model and is usually around 230. Two 88-key acoustic instruments need not share the same count. A conventional digital piano produces its ordinary electronic sound without striking acoustic strings.

Why are there one, two or three strings for a note?

In Yamaha’s explanation, tenor and treble notes use three strings. Moving down through the bass, groups reduce from three to two to one. Multiple strings contribute to volume and the character of a note. Exact transition points depend on the design.

Are bass and treble strings made the same way?

Yamaha describes copper-wound bass strings and bare-wire tenor and treble strings. That explains the contrast in its acoustic design; it is not an exact inventory of every maker’s piano.

Does 230 strings mean 230 adjustments in a tuning?

No fixed workload follows from that figure. The instrument’s condition, pitch and work required matter. Ask the technician what tuning, pitch adjustment or repair is appropriate rather than estimating the service from the string count.

What if I notice a broken or loose string?

Describe the affected note and ask a qualified technician to assess the instrument. Remaining strings may still sound in a multi-string group; that does not establish its condition or the repair needed. Do not adjust tension or handle loose strings yourself.
