Renting an instrument for an ABRSM grade.
A recurring one, and a sensible thing to do. Practising for a graded exam on an instrument that will not hold its tuning, or whose action is nothing like the one in the exam room, costs a candidate marks that have nothing to do with how well they play.
People take an instrument for the couple of months before a grade, and a good number of them are choosing between two or three. That is a decision to make with your hands, not from a list.

Renting for the home
An upright at home, or an instrument for a graded exam.
Two different jobs sit under the same word. Daily practice at home runs for as long as it stays useful and can start whenever an instrument and a delivery slot line up. Preparing for a graded exam runs against a date that is already fixed, so the piano wants to be in the room with weeks to spare rather than days.
What decides the instrument
- What is free for your dates, because the choice is whatever is available at the time rather than a catalogue
- How long you want it, and the date you want it to start
- The room it stands in, and the lift, the stairs and the doorways it has to pass to reach it
What to confirm in the quotation
- The total rental period, from the start date to the day it goes back
- Delivery and collection, both ends quoted together
- Tuning, when it happens once the piano has settled, and whether it sits in the figure
- The deposit terms, what is held and when it comes back
- Whether a minimum term applies, and what happens if you need to extend or end the rental early

Renting may suit a temporary need or a beginner still settling into lessons; buying may suit a longer commitment. Is exam-practice piano rental the same as an hourly studio booking?

What does piano rental cost in Singapore?
It depends on four things, and any price quoted without them is a guess: the instrument, how long you need it, where it is going and how it gets in.
An upright in a lift accessible flat for several months is a very different job from a grand carried into a ballroom for one evening and taken out the same night. Send those four answers and you get a real number back.
Can I rent for a single event?
Yes. Recitals, weddings, corporate evenings, shoots and recordings are a regular part of the work. Delivery, setup, tuning on site and collection afterwards are quoted with the instrument.
Do you tune it after delivery?
A piano that has just been moved needs tuning once it has settled in the room. For events that means tuning on site ahead of the performance. It is quoted as part of the job rather than added later.
Can I rent first and buy later?
Ask when you enquire. It is a common way to start when a child has only just begun lessons and nobody wants to commit to an instrument yet.
What do you need to know about access?
Whether there is a lift and whether the piano fits it, the number of steps if there is not, door widths, and where the piano will finally stand. Access is what changes the crew and the price, so it is better known before a date is held than discovered on the day.
How far ahead should I book an event piano?
As early as you have the date. Weekend event dates go first, and the right instrument for a hall is not always the one that is free.
