Home/Guides/Yamaha U1 vs B3 comparison
Model comparisonYamaha U1 and B3: different lines, different instruments.
The U1 is a 121 cm upright from the Yamaha U Series. The B3 is a taller model from the older B Series, sold in some regional markets. They are different product lines at different specification levels. This guide covers what each model is, how the older B3 differs from the 2026 B30, and what to check on a used instrument.

The model name is the starting point.
The Yamaha U1 belongs to the U Series, Yamaha’s established line of upright pianos. Yamaha Singapore’s U Series specifications page lists the U1 at 121 cm high, 153 cm wide and 62 cm deep.
The B3 belongs to a separate B-series product line. Yamaha’s USA b-series reference lists b3 at 121 cm high, 152 cm wide and 62 cm deep, with a listed mass of 237 kg. The U1 dimensions above use Yamaha Singapore, so these are explicitly regional references. Confirm the exact used instruments rather than transferring figures between years or markets.
The two lines differ in specification level, materials, preparation and market positioning. A model name tells you what product line the piano belongs to; it does not tell you how a particular used example sounds or feels today.
A naming distinction that matters.
In 2026, Yamaha Singapore introduced a new B Series with models designated B10, B20 and B30. These are a new product generation, not a renaming of the older B1, B2 and B3.
A used B3 from the older product line and a current B30 from the 2026 line are different instruments with different specifications. Do not assume:
- That a B3 and a B30 share the same dimensions, action or features
- That a B3 listing is a misspelling of B30 or vice versa
- That specifications from one apply to the other
When looking at a used instrument described as a B3, confirm the exact model name on the plate, the serial number and the production year. When looking at a new B30, use Yamaha Singapore’s current product page for the specifications.
The inspection settles more.
If you are comparing a used U1 and a used B3, the inspection matters more than the model hierarchy. Both are Yamaha uprights, and both may have been in use for years under different conditions. What to check on each:
- Serial number and year: date both instruments using Yamaha’s own serial number reference. Two pianos from different decades are different instruments in different condition, regardless of the model name.
- Action and touch: play the same passages on both at quiet and moderate levels. Does the key feel even? Does it repeat cleanly? How quickly does it return?
- Tone: compare the same chord in the bass, middle and treble. Listen for clarity, evenness and warmth.
- Condition: hammer wear, tuning pin torque, soundboard, dampers and the cabinet. The viewing checklist covers the full routine.
- Service history: what work has been done and what is outstanding. Ask for specifics rather than a general assurance.
A well-maintained B3 may feel and sound better than a neglected U1, and vice versa. The model name is the beginning of the comparison, not the conclusion.
Compare the complete purchase.
The instrument price is one part of the total cost. Compare the full quotation for each piano:
- The price of the instrument on its own
- Delivery, including access assessment and floor protection
- The first tuning after delivery
- What is covered after the sale, and for how long
A more expensive model name does not automatically mean a more expensive total purchase. The sale page lists what to have confirmed in the written quotation. The U1 vs U1J guide covers the J suffix distinction for U1 variants.
U1 vs B3, answered.
Is a B3 the same as a B30?
No. The B3 is a model from Yamaha’s older B Series, listed on the USA specifications page. The B30 is part of the 2026 B Series on Yamaha Singapore’s site. They are different designations from different product generations. Do not assume one is a renaming of the other or that their specifications are interchangeable.
Is the U1 better than the B3?
They are from different product lines. The U Series is Yamaha’s established upright line; the B Series was positioned differently. On a used instrument, the condition and preparation matter at least as much as the model hierarchy. Compare the actual pianos rather than choosing on model name alone.
How tall is a B3?
Yamaha’s USA b-series reference lists b3 at 121 cm high, 152 cm wide and 62 cm deep, with a listed mass of 237 kg. This regional reference does not establish the measurements or condition of every older used example. Confirm the exact instrument.
Does Music Companion stock B3 pianos?
Ask us what is available. The B3 is not a listed model on this site. This guide does not promise a B3 arrival or notification service. Confirm current availability before travelling.
